Connectionism the Miracle Mind Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Connectionism as a model of the mind has recently been challenging the Classical model, in which the mind is regarded as symbol manipulating system. The main arguments against Connectionism concern its inability to form mental representations for complex expressions, which can be used for structure sensitive operations. Some argue for hybrid models which combine some of the most attractive features of the Classical and Connectionist models. This paper starts off by examining the definitions of the different approaches and also their strengths and weaknesses. One section is devoted to the debate between the advocators of the different paradigms, including the arguments about the lack of compositionality and systematicity in Connectionist cognitive models. We then argue for the Connectionist approach as the most attractive model of the mind. This includes performing the “miracle” of defining structure sensitive operations on non-symbolic representations of concepts.

An Exegetic Study of the Verse 35 of the Chapter Sad with an Answer to the Objection against the Solomon`s Prayer
Solomon, the prophet, (a) called upon the Almighty God for a unique government, as stated in the verse 35 of Sad: "He said: My Lord! Forgive me and bestow on me sovereignty such shall not belong to any after me." The Almighty God granted him a unique government. Here an objection rises in the mind: why did the prophet called upon God such a government that no one may have after him? Isn`t it a ...
متن کاملEverything that Linguists have Always Wanted to Know about Connectionism *
This paper is meant to be an introduction to connectionism for linguists. It covers fundamentals of connectionism and applications of connectionism to human language processing. Because the first (and the last for some) question that linguists want to ask is “why bother with connectionism?” it would be appropriate to try to answer this question first. A quick and rather naive answer is that bot...

This is not the place to present an introduction to connectionism, an approach to modeling 2 cognitive phenomena that was first developed in the 1950s and once again gained prominence i...
متن کاملConnectionism vs. Computational Theory of Mind
Usually, the problems in AI may be many times related to Philosophy of Mind, and perhaps because this reason may be in essence very disputable. So, for instance, the famous question: Can a machine to think? It was proposed by Alan Turing [16]. And it may be the more decisive question, but for many people it would be a non-sense. So, two of the very fundamental and more confronted positions usua...
